WORKING HOLIDAY

Working Holiday Visa for your Citizens

For the purpose of promoting greater mutual understanding between Japan and your country, the governments of these two countries agreed to start a working holiday scheme to help encourage the exchange of young people. This program makes it possible for citizens of one country to enter the other primarily for a holiday over an extended period, and also to engage in employment as an incidental aspect of their trip(study) in order to supplement their stay funds.
Upon arrival you’ll receive a 180-day visa which can be extended another 180 days during your stay in Japan.
To study Japanese at our school, you need a visa of 3 months or more. If you wish to continue studying Japanese, you will need to change to a student visa. Please contact us for details.

TEST PREPARATION

TEST PREPARATION

For many students at Yoshida, their goal is to learn sufficient Japanese to be able to enter a Japanese university, college or technical school. At Yoshida we try and help students to understand better the requirements of the university or school they wish to enter and coach them to do well on the examinations required for entrance.

Most universities require students to take the Examination for Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU). Technical schools require students to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
The proficiency test evaluates only a student’s ability to understand Japanese language while the entrance exam covers both language skills and specific subject knowledge. Students looking to gauge their progress in Japanese often use the proficiency test as a measure.

Students in our full-time courses prepare for the tests. With analyzed materials based on previous years, we can help you to achieve your goal. Each class will be arranged according to student’s knowledge. (For Intermediate and Advanced courses only.)

Both tests are administered by the AIEJ, which maintains a website with extensive information on both the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU). Many bookstores around Japan carry preparation materials used to study for these tests. In Tokyo, an ideal source of these materials is Bonjinsha, a bookstore dedicated to Japanese language study materials.

Japanese Language Proficiency Test(JLPT)

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is a national Japanese language test and takes place twice a year in July and December. There are five versions of the test, from the beginning Level 5 (N5) through the advanced Level 1 (N1). Students in most Japanese language programs study material contained in the Level N3, Leve N4 and Level N5 tests, but the Level N2 and Level N1 tests are significantly more difficult because of the depth and breadth of material they cover. Students in our full-time courses prepare for the test once a week during the summer and twice a week in the fall.
shruti
The test itself is structured into three parts: language knowledge (60 points), listening (60 points), reading (60 points). The length of each section depends on the level — the higher the level, the longer the test. The number of kanji and the amount of vocabulary a student is expected to know also increases with each level:

A choice of five test levels

The JLPT is offered in five levels (N1, N2, N3, N4, N5). Test items differ by level in order to closely measure one’s Japanese proficiency.
The old test through 2010 was offered in four levels (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4). The new test offers N3, a new level between Level 2 and Level 3 in the old test. The increase in the number of test levels enables examinees to choose a more suitable level for them.
See “A summary of linguistic competence required for each level”

Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students(EJU)

To enter into a Japanese university, students must take The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, which is refered to as the EJU exam. This exam tests four subject areas, Japanese as a Foreign Language, Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), Japan and the World, and Mathematics. Within the Science portion, candidates select two out of three disciplines and there are two levels of the Mathematics portion. The exact requirements vary depending upon the university a student considers. Students in the humanities and social sciences may not need to take the Science portion while some science students may be able to skip the society and history sections.

SCHOOL RULES

School rules of Yoshida Institute of Japanese Language

We really want to support your dream come true here in Yoshida Institute of Japanese Language. We don’t want to push our rules on you, but you keep these rules in mind and do your best for your success.

This is how we consider when your attendance rate is low

  1. Without special reason, when your attendance rate is not more than 70% during three months before a Visa renewal, your application will not be accepted and you will be dismissed from Yoshida Institute of Japanese Language.
  2. If we consider that your attendance rate is not improved, you will be dismissed from Yoshida Institute of Japanese Language even if your Visa status is long enough to study in Japan.
  3. When we consider that you are not healthy enough to continue your study in Japan, we will advise you to back to your country for a treatment. At this point, school fees won’t be paid back to you. However, when you become well and come back to study Japanese, you will be able to study for the term you had paid for.

This is how we consider when your performance is not good

After a certain period of studying Japanese, if you still don’t master Basic Japanese, and if we consider that you are not suitable for learning Japanese, you may be advised to return to your country. In this case, a certain period means one year, which is half of the longest studying period.

EXAMINATIONS AND PROMOTION TO A UPPER CLASS

The end-of-term examination will be held four times a year (March, June, September and December). Promotion will be decided by the total results of end-of-term examination as well as scores of regular tests including several tests, Kanji tests, composition, home works, others. Your total score must be 60% or more for a promotion. If failed, you will have to repeat the same class. You can take the examination even if you are late, but your score will be counted with 90% of your performance, while you are not allowed to take a listening test. Please be careful that an additional examination will not be held.
If you give up and leave school, we will issue a level certification.

The end-of-term examination

In order to pass, (1) total score needs to be at or above the point required for passing and (2) Grammar score scoring section needs to be at or above the minimum point required for passing (sectional pass mark). If there is even one scoring section where the score is below the sectional pass mark, examinees are determined to have failed, no matter how high the total score he/she might have.

Scoring sections of A-(Beginner) class and other classes are different. Overall pass marks and sectional pass marks for each level are shown in the table below.

A-(Beginner) class : Total score 60 %, Grammar : Sectional pass marks-less than 70 percent.
Other classes : Total score 60 %, Grammar : Sectional pass marks-less than 60 percent.
